Blame for the plant’s postponed start date can be placed squarely on the downturn of the global economy and US automobile sales in particular. Fortunately, Toyota had yet to fully staff the plant and has no plans to let any workers go.

Perhaps the most production-feasible of the three is the plain electric BlueZero E-CELL, which features a range of up to 120 miles per charge of its lithium ion battery pack. Another option is the E-CELL PLUS, which adds the three-cylinder engine from the smart fortwo to the drivetrain and allows the battery pack to be recharged on-the-run for a range of up to 370 miles, the first 60 of which are on battery power alone
